The game was released in three different installments for [NTSC] and two different installments for [PAL].  Although released in three different installments for [NTSC] you will only find two types of discs, the black label and platinum hits. It does not matter which installment of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is used, whether its black label, platinum hits or classics edition all these installments can be used to softmod your original Xbox. Now, Splinter Cell's success went off to create sequels, these sequels are "not" compatible to softmod your original Xbox. Below is a breakdown of all the Splinter Cell games on the original Xbox, it will assist you in choosing the correct game.
